Something that I do with all of my stories is create a dramatis personae— a list of all of my characters and who they are. My Legends of Lorata dramatis personae is a very large file; some of my characters are constants across the books, but others are unique to just one of them.
I keep mine as a chart, and list all sorts of information in them; names, hair color, eye color, approximate ages, important roles… sometimes I will even list weapons, magical powers, and special relationships. My science-fiction’s dramatis personae lists the characters’ homeworlds.
