Peter glared at him and said some words that bored no repeating. He pulled his horse up in front of James’s, forcing and the baron’s son to reign in his animal, lest they run in to one another.
“What in the world are you doing?” James cried as his horse whinnied. He patted its mane in an effort to calm it.
“This world is exactly the problem!” Peter shouted. “You didn’t ask us before bringing us to your world, and now there are already several things threatening our lives.”
Cerys rode up beside her brother and reached out for his arm to try calming him down. “This is the type of world we always liked to see in our movies and books, things that we have fought with in our table top games. It can’t be on that bad.”
“Giant horned buffalo carcasses falling down from the sky is not all that bad?!” Peter’s face was starting to get to red. “In Dungeons and Dragons, we at least fought things at ground level.” He turned to glare at James. “But you brought us here completely unprepared!”
“You keep making the same complaint,” James pointed out. “Are you trying to tell me that you would have said ‘no’ if I had asked you ahead of time?”
Peter narrowed his eyes. “Who cares what I would have said if you had asked! The point is, you still need to ask.”
Cerys looked to her brother’s boyfriend, and he look back at her, exchange in the same worried glance with one another. As much as Bayani really liked Peter, this was his most frustrating flaw, the way he got so upset about something, and clung to a certain detail. He ended up making others to feel bad about that aspect of the situation, whether or meant he intended to. He would get hung up on exactly how something was being done, despite whether or not he wanted it to be done. To him, the way in which it was done was just as important as how what was going on.
Cerys sometimes understood why her brother got so caught up in the details, but other times, the only way she could explain it was to say, “He’s only 15.” Both of them hoped that he would mellow out as he got older.
“Look,” James said, “if you really want, I can ride with you and your boyfriend back to the wizard’s cottage in our barony. As far out as we are now, it is several days’ ride. Still, if you cannot complete this quest, I might as well get you home now, before you cross the border. I’m sure the girls will be fine riding on ahead without you.”
