Writing 101, Day Nineteen: Don’t Stop the Rockin’
Today is a free writing day. Write at least four-hundred words, and once you start typing, don’t stop. No self-editing, no trash-talking, and no second guessing: just go. Bonus points if you tackle an idea you’ve been playing with but think is too silly to post about.
Zarrek had not expected to see the older man again. He had left the kingdom nearly six years ago, not long after the terrible battle with Metius that had torn apart the royal family. He knew that the queen Would want nothing to do with his services, and he had left with little ceremony.
Yet there he was, standing in the rainy shadows of the willow grove, waiting for the prince. It was still a long time before dawn, but Zarrek was used to keeping such hours.
“Have you been waiting for long?”
“No, your highness,” the armored man replied.
Zarrek wondered to himself for a moment whether the man even needed to address him so formally, now that he no longer served Onsira.
“I am surprised to hear from you, Elezar. How goes your new life in Thiizav.”
“It was fine for a while, your highness,” the former general replied, his gravely voice heavy with anger. “But now it is in jeopardy.”
“Is that why you summoned me?”
“Aye, it is. I would not have disturbed you were it not of great importance.”
Zarrek nodded. “I have never known you to act with frivolity. What has happened?”
“It is my k’haarana, sire. She and my son have been… taken.”
“Taken? Kidnapped, you mean?” Zarrek did not waste time discussing his surprise that the former general had taken a lover; that was a matter better left for later. “Do you have any idea why?”
“I do,” ELezar replied with a nod, “but you are not going to like it.”
“It cannot be worse than that rowdy bard living in my castle,” the prince told him with a grumble. “What is it?”
“You have garnered a lot of frustration from the Destroyer, young prince. He is furious that you will not do more to serve him, and now he has chosen me to convince you to attend his temple.”
“Metius?” Zarrek scoffed. “I have no reason to serve him!”
“Whatever you have done to scorn him,” Elezar went on, “he has sent one of his lesser demons to trap my beloved and our child. He knew I would come here to speak with you about it.”
Zarrek thought over the situation for a long moment, and then said to Elezar, “I have no intention whatsoever of attending the dark temple in order to serve the demon god.” His tone was final, absolute. Still, he added, “I promise you this, though: we will set free your family, and banish Metius’s lackey in doing so.”
